Personally, I am very pleased with the entire series and will continue watching it over and over! I consider it a guilty pleasure!!! This scene does, however, add a necessary element of drama and was a welcome surprise once the scene was over. The only thing added that was not in the book was the final battle scene (which caused me to really embarrass my children in a packed theater). Understandably, there were some elemental details that were sacrificed due to film length and necessity to story line. I love the way the story unfolds (mostly) the same as in the books. I read the books three times before the first movie came out. Really, that was under control to some extent by the time this movie came along, but in earlier films of the series it was a bit tedious. I don't go in for the maudlin, teen romance flicks, but the science fiction/fantasy wrapper and the world building that really comes out in this installment more than made up for a any moments where I was tired of watching the three leads fight, kiss and make up, fight again, change their minds, etc. There was a lot of hate floating around the reviews about he way this installment ended, but I kind of liked the bloodless victory at the end, the 'happy ending' and the hint at further adventures and developments that we will surely never get to see. Each movie seems to have a primary crisis of some sort that leads to a significant moment of resolution at the end. In particular, I really like the complex dynamic between the wolves, the vamps, the people, the other vamps and the Italian vamps. Admittedly, I did not read the books, but I think that the movies were interesting and kept my attention throughout.
